Seems like business is picking up again so here goes:
No one is off-limits from my current roster and I remain interested in 2020, 2021 major league debut type players. My emphasis is on longer term upside.
Some highlights of what is available:
C Francisco Mejia SDP - Mejia will not come cheap and I am perfectly happy to keep him if nobody meets my price at this time. Mejia is very valuable now that the Padres have committed to giving him the opportunity to stick at catcher. Catcher is a real wasteland right now in fantasy baseball and a player with Mejia’s offensive potential is a gold mine at the position. He is only available because I have stashed numerous high upside catchers and believe I will have a top catcher from either Daulton Varsho or Ronaldo Hernandez on my timeline of when I expect to compete.
Others available at the catching position: Austin Barnes - someone looking for a cheap starter at the position could do worse, Barnes has an opportunity now that Grandal is a free agent and is most likely to leave LAD.
1B Peter Alonso NYM - Alonso has some of the very best power of any prospect in baseball. New Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen has gushed about Alonso since taking over the Mets front office last week and it doesn’t sound like Alonso will be held back. He could be in the Opening Day lineup or get the Kris Bryant, Ronald Acuna Jr. service time treatment and be up a few weeks into the season. Either way he stands to play often in 2019 and be an elite source of homeruns.
Others available at the first base position: Dominic Smith - The Mets gave Smith an OF glove so while his prospect star has dimmed he is not blocked by Alonso if Dom gets it going with the bat, he will play corner OF.
2B Jeff McNeil NYM - older prospect who had a big breakout year and more than held his own in his MLB debut. A contact hitting machine with extra base hit ability and figures to be the Mets primary 2B.
3B Yandy DiazCLE TBR - Yandy Diaz is in line for much more playing time and his first extended opportunity in 2019 as the Indians are expected to let Brantley and Donaldson walk, shift Jose Ramirez to 2B and Kipnis to LF (EDIT: Yandy Diaz now looks to get the bulk of the playing time at first base for the Rays.) Now is the time to get in on Yandy (a tip for your other leagues!) I’m not sure anyone will meet my price on Yandy right now but I will more aggressively shop him once the breakout I expect comes to fruition if I’m not moved to trade him this offseason.
SS Amed Rosario NYM - made major strides in the second half of 2018. 47 runs scored in his final 300 at bats of 2018 compares quite favorably with the elite leadoff hitters in baseball. Expect Amed to be a mainstay going forward in the leadoff hole for the Mets. 5 homers and 20 SB in those final 300 at bats. This is still a developing player and the homer potential is muted for now but 100 runs, 10 homers, 40 SB is in play as early as 2019.
SS Orlando Arcia MIL - those who followed the Brewers in the postseason closely saw Arcia come up big a few times. The Brewers want him to succeed and know they need his elite defense at the SS position. This helps because it guarantees they will give him every opportunity to figure it out with the bat. Is he starting to figure it out with the bat? I don’t know but he did hit .290 to finish the season once brought back from the minors and had an impact postseason - .333 avg with 3 homers in 33 at bats. This former top SS prospect is also a potential major source of SB. Watch closely for the breakout.
OF Cedric Mullins BAL - held his own in MLB debut to close out 2018 and figures to see plenty of time at the top of the lineup for a rebuilding Orioles team. Doesn’t hurt hitting in Orioles Park Camden Yards.
OF Albert Almora CHC - another former top prospect who is still very young and will always get extended opportunities due to his stellar defense. You can do worse than taking a flyer on an Almora breakout season.
Other OF available:Yoenis Cespedes - I can eat the maximum amount of contract allowed under the rules (full 2019 salary, 10m 2020 salary) to get something in return for Cespedes. He won’t be ready for the start of the season recovering from heel surgery but is a potential impact bat when he does return. If you want to take a flyer on him, you can have him at no cap cost this year as long as I am getting an upside prospect in return. Alternatively, I can release or amnesty Cespedes and trade up to 29m cap in 2019 for prospects.
In summary, nothing is off limits as I will listen on any of my MLB players or prospects. I do like trades that net me good quantity of high upside players with a longer term horizon to the majors.
