Draft Analysis: Casey Mize and Jonathan India were under consideration at Pick #1.1. Ultimately, the NYM decided to trade back to pick up additional assets. Mize should come fast and likely would have beat the NYM timeline to compete in MLB Sim. As a pitching prospect, he is naturally more risky than building around a bat. Nick Solak is an advanced prospect with a high floor and Ben Zobrist like ceiling. Scooping up Solak while still having a chance to draft India at 1.5 was a success for the NYM. At 1.5, the NYM considered Jonathan India, Jarred Kelenic, and Travis Swaggerty. The NYM were scared off of India by the Reds already crowded infield, the Reds (mis)handling of Senzel, and some questions about whether India really has superstar potential. The NYM see more superstar potential with Kelenic but also a lower floor. The NYM were intrigued by Swaggerty and may have drafted him had they once again been able to trade back in the first round. The NYM did not receive a compelling early-middle first round pick offer and therefore entertained an offer from the Twins. The Twins having already traded up for Bart at 1.4 could not offer an early-middle first round pick. Royce Lewis is an enormous get for the NYM with 1.5, 2.1, Monte Harrison, and 2019 round 2 headed out the door. The NYM believe that Royce Lewis is as talented as any prospect in this draft class and his proven track record in the minors and emergence as a top prospect in baseball made this the right move for the rebuilding NYM. In round 3, the NYM dipped into the international market snagging a high upside youngster Noelvi Marte. Marte should rise quickly to the top of the Mariners top prospects in the MLB’s weakest team farm system. There is enormous upside here albeit with a (very) long wait. At 3.4, the NYM were surprised to find Simeon Woods-Richardson available. The NYM don’t often target pitching prospects because of the inherent injury risk of pitching prospects. However, the NYM did not expect him to still be around at their next pick, 3.23, and the upside was too great to pass up.
Next, the NYM nabbed Ryder Green. Green is a big time power bat and has a chance to develop into a better overall hitter as he joins the Yankees, one of the best farm systems in Major League Baseball. Staying close the home, the NYM last selection in the third round was Francisco Alvarez. The Mets signed Alvarez to a very large bonus and he was the best catching prospect still available at this pick. The NYM started the fourth round by adding more international talent with Alvin Guzman. Between Noelvi Marte, Francisco Alvarez, and Alvin Guzman, the NYM acquired 3 of their top 8 ranked international prospects for the 2018 J2 cycle. In round 5, the NYM looked deeper in the Amateur draft to pluck Brock Deatherage of the Detroit Tigers. Deatherage was not a top pick in this draft but got his professional career off to a blazing start making him well worthy of a fifth round pick.
